Health and Life Sciences research

Our life-changing research involves the application of advanced knowledge and skills to improve health and social care, within selected areas of the health and life sciences sector. These areas are defined by the organisation of research into groups within the four Schools of Study.

The Faculty’s research is inevitably diverse and takes a variety of forms (e.g. laboratory based, health and social care practice evaluation, industrially collaborative), which provides a wide range of collaborative opportunities based on a mix of enterprise and knowledge transfer.

Much of our research is multi-disciplinary and we promote cross-group collaboration within the University, as well as vibrant links with external organisations and dynamic international partnerships. We welcome enquiries from practitioners in private and public sectors, policy-makers and academics seeking to develop research partnerships.

We aim to improve peoples’ health and wellbeing through research. Our research activities impact organisational, regional, national and international agendas; our staff serve on advisory committees at all levels, act as expert witnesses and provide consultancy services.

A multi-disciplinary approach

Within the School of Applied Social Sciences the research areas are: criminal justice, policy and practice; health policy; Mary Seacole research centre; participation and social justice; psychology; reproduction research; social work; and young people. Research within the School of Pharmacy is focused on chemistry for health, pharmaceutical technologies, pharmacology, and pharmacy practice. The Schools of Allied Health Sciences and Nursing and Midwifery research areas are biomedical and environmental health, biomolecular technology, human communication studies, social study of thalassaemia and sickle cell, and nursing and midwifery.

The Faculty is actively involved in a several cross-faculty research endeavors, such as the Health Policy Research Unit and the Centre for Intercultural research in Communication and Learning. We also have a number of Special Interest Clusters, which act as a catalyst for interdisciplinary research. These include the Food and Nutrition cluster and the Infection Research cluster.
